This is a potentially poignant image for many people who have had the misfortune of getting into a pool or the ocean with their phone in their bathing suit.
My inspiration for this piece came from my mom who jumped into her pool with her phone tucked into her bathing suit. There’s a sinking feeling, beyond the one in which you are sinking into the water, when you realize your phone is in the water with you.
This happened to my wife during a wonderful trip to Virgin Gorda in December 2016, in which she took her phone for a final wonderful 30-minute snorkeling trip in the warm salt water of the Virgin Islands. The phone was finished, and after the initial shock she enjoyed being digitally disconnected during the rest of the trip.
